Off-roading is more popular than ever, and for beginners, choosing the right vehicle can appear complicated. With so many choices out there, it’s important to pick a car that won’t let you down when you are miles from civilization. Today’s modern vehicles are fitted with a whole host of features to make off-roading easier, safer, and more exciting. Here’s our guide to the things you need to look out for:

Four-Wheel Drive

If you’re going off-road, you need a four-wheel drive, but thanks to advances in technology, your choice doesn’t end there because now there are different types of four-wheel drive:

Full-time 4WD
Part-time 4WD
Part-time AWD
All-wheel drive (AWD)

Full-time 4WD is the original system that sends engine power equally to all four wheels and is usually only seen in serious off-road vehicles.

Part-time 4WD remains in rear-wheel-drive mode until needed, thereby reducing costs by increasing fuel efficiency.

Part-Time All-Wheel Drive works like front-wheel-drive powertrains; until traction is lost, the system automatically sends power to the rear wheels for additional traction. While this system is cheaper and improves fuel efficiency, vehicles fitted with these systems are not designed for heavy off-road use.

All-wheel drive systems are based on sophisticated electronic or hydraulic sensors that determine which wheels need the most power and respond accordingly.

High Ground Clearance

It is easy to get carried away with your vehicle’s engine size and impressive electronics, but ground clearance must not be forgotten. When driving off-road, high ground clearance is essential as it reduces the risk of damaging the car and provides a heightened driving position.

When it comes to considering the ground clearance your car has, there are many factors you have to consider. The angle of the car is a factor you need to keep in mind for your approach, break over, and departure. All of these components will determine the outcome of your vehicle after going over obstacles, as it is highly likely if you misjudge a certain terrain, there is a chance of you damaging the bottom of your vehicle and the potential risk of getting high-centered on an object.

The best note to keep in mind is that the more adventurous and extreme your terrains will be, the higher ground clearance you will need.

Quality Suspension

Good suspension is vital when off-roading; it improves your vehicle’s reliability and safety, making the whole experience more enjoyable. The more suspension travel you have, the better the contact between your tires and the terrain.

It is important to keep the suspension maintained as a result of negligence, the suspension may wear out, and this may cause an array of problems throughout your vehicle. The main issue will be the ability to steer, which is an essential asset when navigating through off-roading terrains. After all, shocks are the components that make you have a comfortable ride on bumpy terrain.

Tires

No matter how good your off-road vehicle is, it will only ever be as good as the set of tires you fit it with, so it’s important to match your tires to your chosen trail. The two most common types of off-road tires are all-terrains (A/T) and mud-terrains (M/T). With sidewall lugs for rocky terrain and deep mud, plus high void treads and puncture-resistant 3-Ply polyester sidewall, Nitto 2286 tires are a great choice for your off-road adventure.

Your tires can be affected by the condition of your strut. It is important to inspect each of your tires often, as it will cause uneven wear and tear on the tracks of your tires. It is essential that you ensure your tires have the right amount of traction for the terrain you are wanting to drive on.

Most Popular Off-Road Vehicles

Now you know what to look out for, here’s a little look into the most popular vehicles out there to consider buying.

Jeep Wrangler

Jeep’s most popular model and the go-to vehicle for off-roaders, the iconic Wrangler, is a classic. It has excellent off-road capability, is available as a plug-in hybrid and V8, and comes with removable doors and roof.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

The redesigned 2022 Grand Cherokee is full of the latest tech and as comfortable and luxurious as before, and the available Trailhawk trim turns this into a more than capable off-roader. There are three powertrains to choose from, including the highly efficient 4xe plug-in hybrid and a three-row version on a stretched wheelbase.

Land Rover Defender

There is a reason the Defender has been around so long, and that is because it does the job you need it to do while putting a smile on your face at the same time. The design is simple but classic, and the new model has a major tech upgrade, as well as a refined four-cylinder, inline-six, and V-8 engine choices.

Chevrolet Colorado

The 2023 Colorado offers five unique trims, including the Colorado Trail Boss and All-New ZR2 Desert Boss Special Edition. Available with factory-lifted suspension and a wider chassis, it’s perfect for all your off-road action. There’s also a new 8-Speed automatic transmission, five available drive modes, plus an off-road performance display.

Toyota 4Runner

The Toyota 4Runner has been around for over 30 years, but underneath its old-school SUV looks, it hasn’t stood still and boasts plenty of modern tech. Cargo space is impressive and off-road performance is up there with the best.

Ford Bronco

Launched in 2020, the Bronco is better than the Wrangler in many ways, but the modern design may not appeal to everyone. There’s no doubting its off-road capability, however, and it is available with a seven-speed manual transmission.

Last Words

There are many factors that should be considered when buying an off-roading vehicle. It is important to keep all of this in mind and to ensure the vehicle you choose is right for the terrain/ route you are planning to drive on. Otherwise, you may see yourself with an outstanding repair bill on your first ride.
