Having your trusted vehicle break down on the side of the road is possibly one of the worst nightmares you could encounter.  Repair costs aside, it can potentially disrupt your plans for many coming days. Finding a trustworthy mechanic to fix the vehicle is another long row to hoe. There are more than 2,39,000 auto repair and maintenance centers in the United States, according to a Statista report. Especially in today’s environment, it takes a little more than providing a voice command to Siri on your phone to find an honest mechanic. An established way to find a good mechanic is by either word of mouth or recommendations from the people you trust. Another effective way is to do thorough research online with the help of reviews and experiences of the motorists who already have experienced their services and have spread the good word about it.

Despite all the care and research, there is a strong possibility that you may end up with a mechanic who is in the habit of ripping their customers off. Experience with such an establishment could leave a bad taste in your mouth and your pocket out of cash. For a common driver or vehicle owner who does not understand the mechanism of an engine or any other complex mechanical system in their vehicle, it is easy for a mechanic to trick them into paying for services that they might not need. We are not suggesting that every mechanic is involved in this practice; however, some bad apples are responsible for giving a bad name to the rest of the otherwise honest and hardworking community.

Following are some of the most prevalent car repair scams that dishonest mechanics use to part you from your hard-earned cash.  Keep in mind that they might not do exactly as we may have mentioned over here, but at least you can get an idea about how to spot such behavior and how to prevent yourself from getting ripped.

Repair Estimates Rip-off

Whether you are visiting a new mechanic or the regular garage, you have been using for a while. If you do not make a habit of asking for a written estimate before you let them start the repair, you are always vulnerable to that kind of scam.

The scam starts when you are provided with a very reasonable and satisfactory verbal quote when you drop your vehicle off. Once the repair is done and you go to collect your vehicle, you learn that the final bill amount is raised considerably from the verbal quote given before. You are given an explanation about the price hike that since additional problems were found during the repair, it was necessary to carry out the repairs while the mechanics were at it. The only way to evade this situation is to always ask for a written estimate and instruct the workshop to take consent before carrying out any additional repairs.

Parts Replacement Scams

This is one of the easiest scams for mechanics to perform. When you drop your vehicle at the garage, the mechanic starts performing the repairs, and, in that process, they claim to have replaced the parts that they never did. Not only they would charge you for the parts they never replaced, but they also add labor charges for the replacement that never happened.

There are different variations for this scam; another way they part you from your cash is by installing either substandard or used spare parts and charging you for brand new spare parts. Those parts cost way less, and the mechanic can make quick money out of this.

Using counterfeit parts can also be a profit-wielding business for unscrupulous repair shop owners as they charge you the price of genuine spare parts. This gives them a way higher profit margin as they put counterfeit replacement parts and charge the labor on top of it.

Engine Replacement Scams

Engine replacements are part and parcel of automotive workings and happen all the time. Not only it saves time but also gives you the possibility of stress-free driving for years to come. However, unless you can find a trustworthy replacement engine seller, you should always keep your guard high to evade scammers.

The practice of reversing the mileage of the engine is common, and you should insist on asking for supportive documentation with the engine to prove the mileage. Always try to buy from a garage that has been in the business for many years and has a great reputation. Make sure they inspect and test every engine before selling it.

If you are buying a reconditioned or rebuilt engine, then make sure that the highest standards are maintained and that only genuine OEM parts have been used in the process. Always insist on seeing the results of compression and running tests on the engine before buying it.

Advertisement Bait Scams

In this kind of scam, you are presented with an alluring offer on servicing your vehicle or on a specific repair job, and once you bring your vehicle into the workshop, they find many other repair jobs that your vehicle may or may not require and produce an invoice that is way higher than your expectations.

The best way to tackle such a situation is to never let them start the work before getting a written estimate, and if during the work they ask you to repair something that you were not in at the first place, simply refuse the offer and ask them to focus on the job you came in for.

Confusing You with Finer Details

Modern vehicles are a wonder of the latest and most complex engineering. Unless you are tech-savvy or possess an advanced mechanical degree, it is easy for a mechanic to blind you with technical jargon. They take the edge and confuse you into paying for jobs and spare parts you do not require.

To avoid such a situation, you must ask for clarification until you clearly understand the problem and its solution. You are paying for it, so it is completely fine if you are asking for a clear understanding. Learn about the working of your vehicle, so you do not become easy prey to any mechanic.

Avoid Highway Mechanics

We all have done this at some point in our life. Your vehicle encounters a minor problem, and you think it may need a quick fix and stop by the next garage at a service station or on the highway.

Since it is a common understanding that you may never visit that garage again, they intend to rip you off by mentioning the problems that are never there. Some even go to lengths such as drip oil under the car and claiming that it leaked from your vehicle, indicating a mechanical problem, or puncturing a water hose and then overcharging you for a replacement.

A clear sign of their dishonesty is that they would immediately mention that this problem would compromise your safety and that your vehicle would be in grave danger if you do not get your vehicle fixed immediately. You are advised to drive away if that happens and seek a second opinion and try not to get involved with highway garages if it is not necessary.

Last Words

In a perfect world, you should not do so much research into finding an honest mechanic, but it is how it is, and it is better to be well-informed and vigilant instead of getting ripped off by someone. So, it is better to choose a mechanic after completing some sort of background check and making a habit of getting more than one estimate before committing to the repair. Asking for a written warranty is also a good idea to save your side. We sincerely hope that you cover many miles in the new year without any trouble.
